Company Profile

Bruno Cell is the first Italian SME focusing on cultured meat and seafood research. Founded in 2019, the company co‑funded three PhD projects across two Italian universities, leading to the filing of its first patent in 2022, granted in 2024.  Bruno Cell has been appointed as the cell‑line development leader in the Horizon Europe-funded project FEASTS and secured additional funding through the national Brevetti+ program.

The company continues to strengthen its expertise in cell‑line development while expanding into emerging 3D‑bioprinting technologies that could enable cultured‑meat production in space.

    Products & Services

    • Cell‑line development: PeriPig swine cell lines available for licensing, including both spontaneously immortalized variants and lines capable of adipogenic differentiation. Additional species‑specific cell lines are currently under development, and all licensed materials are supported with dedicated technical assistance.
    • Differentiation technology: patented technology that eliminates non-food‑grade chemical additives for inducing muscle and fat differentiation, accelerates the differentiation process to reduce production costs, is broadly applicable across cell‑line species, and remains fully compatible with scale‑up for industrial workflows.
    • 3D bioprinting: enables production of structured whole‑cut meat combining muscle and fat cells. Developed in collaboration with universities.

    Applications

Bruno Cell aims to develop a circular cultured‑meat and seafood production system inspired by regenerative‑medicine principles and designed for both terrestrial and space environments. At the core of this approach is the integration of microalgae with animal‑cell cultivation, creating a closed‑loop ecosystem capable of producing nutritious and enjoyable foods even in resource‑limited settings. Microalgae play a central role by upcycling waste streams into high‑value nutrients that sustain and expand animal stem cells. These cells are then grown and 3D‑bioprinted into structured whole‑cut meat and seafood, combining muscle and fat tissues to deliver familiar textures and sensory qualities.

The entire system is conceived to be ISRU‑compatible, enabling efficient food production in lunar outposts or other extraterrestrial habitats where conventional agriculture is not feasible. By providing astronauts with high‑quality, culturally meaningful foods, this bioproduction platform supports both nutritional requirements and psychological wellbeing during long‑duration missions, offering comfort and familiarity in environments far from Earth.
